Funding for the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley is still alive.
Thanks to all who have sent letters and e-mails to the budget conference committee in Sacramento to express their support for the California Partnership earmark. If you haven’t already, it is not too late to register your comments in support of the Partnership funding. Below are the phone numbers and e-mail addresses for the budget committee conferees and the leadership of the legislature. The phone and e-mail messages don’t need to be long to be effective. Simply state your support for the Assembly Budget Committee’s recommendation of $5 million for the Partnership activities. Seed funding will help the region move forward with critical projects once the “strategic action proposal” is accepted by the Governor in October.

Proposed 'Advanced Manufacturing Center' invited to submit grant application.
The Manufacturing Cluster has been championing the creation of an “advanced manufacturing center” since its inception. The Economic Development Administration (EDA) has invited the RJI to submit a grant application to fund a complete feasibility study signaling the EDA’s interest in the project. If funded, the study will answer such questions as the amount of market demand for advanced manufacturing services in the region, how to ensure the Center is financially sustainable, and the appropriate location for the proposed Center. Creating the Advanced Manufacturing Center is a key element of the cluster’s RJI action plan.
Creative Economy Council Report wins local prize.
The Creative Economy Council’s report Making the Grass Greener: Recommendations to Retain, Attract, Develop, and Support Knowledge Workers won 1st place in the “Advocacy” category of the Central Section of the California Chapter of the American Planning Association’s 2006 Planning Awards. Making the Grass Greener was applauded for public involvement in the process, great graphics and information, ease of use, and the ability to sparking enthusiasm for a “creative Fresno.” Although the ideas in the report weren’t new, the CEC was commended for taking a hard look at Fresno, making strong recommendations for action, and demonstrating commitment for implementing the recommendations. An awards ceremony is scheduled for mid-July. Congratulations to Suzanne Bertz-Rosa and the members of the Creative Economy Council.

FCASH Monthly Profile: Center for Multicultural Cooperation.
The Center for Multicultural Cooperation promotes educational programs for social and civic responsibility, service-learning, media, technology, art, history and multicultural cooperation. The CMC facilitates the Central Valley Digital Arts Partnership, which includes Stories of Services, Hmong Voices and Latino Legacy. This partnership enables youth to express their ideas and feelings about current issues, historic and cultural topics, and art through digital media. Another program offered by the CMC is the Civic Education Network for Region 7 which is comprised of educators, student leaders, business, government and community leaders, all of whom share the common interest of preparing youth to become active, responsible, and thoughtful participants in our democracy. The CMC’s new Central Valley Youth Democracy Alliance brings together youth leaders to design a youth-led organization and year-round action plan to expand youth voices in local and state government. The CMC has also proposed a multicultural teen center for downtown Fresno, the Central Valley Digital Clubhouse, where youth can develop leadership, communication and collaboration skills; participate in activities for cultural understanding and connections with elders and peers; participate in intergenerational, multicultural, interfaith, and youth dialogues; develop a voice for education reform, media, creative arts and public policymaking; and train in technology and media arts.
