Promoting cultural tourism in Fresno County
Fresno Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) for the last 10 years has worked to build stronger tourism. Now, it has teamed up with Fresno Coalition for Arts, Sciences & History (FCASH) to develop cultural heritage tours for Fresno and the region. ‘Cultural tourism’ is known as a subset of tourism specific to a country or region’s culture. In particular, established tours help visitors discover hidden gems in the historic parts of urban areas as well as indigenous cultural communities of rural areas.
“CVB is the natural home for supporting tourism, and the cultural sector is a major provider of attractions/destinations,” says Cynthia Cooper, FCASH executive director, and RJI Arts & Culture Cluster chair. “By forming a strong partnership, we will be able to do so much more for our community.”
To capture ideas about cultural arts tours, the community is being asked to participate. FCASH has posted a cultural arts tourism survey on its Web site. Please support this venture to build cultural heritage tourism in our area by sharing your ideas and suggestions.

Barn-raising solutions for vibrant health
Last week the California Health Care Coalition and a number of local sponsors held a health care forum in Fresno to share information and discuss ways to improve health care and availability. The first speakers, Dr. Ed Moreno, Fresno County's Public Health Director, and Dr. John Capitman, head of the Central Valley Health Policy Institute, spoke to environmental and social factors that affect the health of the population. So often we focus on individual symptoms and behaviors, when external conditions and cultural norms are the most potent causative factors.

California Forward uses RJI as community transformation model
At its May 15 conference, California Forward highlighted RJI as one of four successful case studies of local community transformation and innovation. The others recognized were the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley (regional level), Human Investment Initiative (county level), and Metro Rural Loop Project (regional level).
California Forward is a civic organization with a vision “to renew the governance of California so elected officials and public agencies can forge the best possible solutions and provide the highest quality of services—supporting the efforts of regions, organizations, and individuals to thrive in this dynamic and competitive century.”
California faces several challenges but, in particular, health care, education, the environment, and economic growth. To meet these challenges, dramatic changes need to be made on how public decisions are made and how public dollars are spent. California Forward aims to transform the state through citizen-driven solutions to provide better representation, smarter budgeting and fiscal management and high-quality public services.

City of Fresno Master Bike Plan Survey: Deadline is July 1
The City of Fresno needs your input to complete its Bicycle Master Plan by spring 2010. To make it easy, it has created a short Bike Plan Survey, which allows Fresno residents to provide input about what they like about bicycling in Fresno and what they would like to see. Future community outreach events are being planned. Go to Bicycle, Pedestrian and Trails Master Plan on the City of Fresno Web site.
